mother mine

i know that look, mother mine

the teasing yet dead-serious look

with the barest glint of mischief in your eyes

and if you’re thinking what i’m thinking

you’re thinking …

that is not funny at all

i often know what you’re going to say

when you’re only halfway through your sentence

though it annoys you when i don’t supply the right word

i know you said “people”

(guys)

won’t want to come near me if i always

hold them at arm’s length

but i am not a sadie hawkins type of girl

and six foot tall men with pretty eyes and

nice smiles

sometimes unnerve me

trust me, mother mine …

“i can see right through to your back collar button”
