drinking scotch straight from a highball glass

happy at last now that the day has passed

i’ve known you sober, darling, and i’ve seen you drunk

just a sad face as you’re lost in space

     no trace of life

          no hope of love

is this what you were dreaming of?

you say you’re an ugly moth

but i know Someone thinks you’re beautiful

cries over you every night

’cause you’ve run so far from home

you say you’re an ugly moth

but i know you can be a butterfly

     floating freely in the breeze

if you believe and live and love

               once again

hurting and lost is the path you’re spinning down

smile pasted blankly on though we know you only frown

you’re killing yourself, darling, as you binge through the nights

drunk on ten-dollar wine and five-dollar women

     no trace of life

          no hope of love

is this what you were dreaming of?

you say you’re an ugly moth

but He bled to make you beautiful

called you by your name

before you ever took a breath

death was an ugly lie

but He died so you could live again

     crying “Abba!” on your knees

so you can believe and live and love

               once again
