simple things

tonight when i got off work it was cold and dark. as i trudged through the parking lot to my car, i decided to thank God instead of grumbling to myself.

i thanked Him for boots and beans, for coats and kittens (and mittens), cars and classical music. i thanked Him for sparkling ice crystals, for snow to remind me how clean His Son made me, for the promise He would bring spring again. i thanked Him for a warm house to go home to where people live whom i love and who love me.

the simple things are bigger than you realize, you see. and then the seemingly big things you don’t have … well, the absence of them doesn’t seem quite so big.

this may be the ice-bound, frost-lashed, graveyard time of year, but it won’t last forever. He’s making all things new.
