petrichor

my dears, it rained today.

from all sounds, it is still raining, and the wind is howling around the house most delightfully.

i like soft, gentle, lazy afternoon rain, but i really love thunderstorms best. i love the joyous violence of lightning and thunder, howling winds and driving rain.

the only person who can tame a storm is God. He’s even wilder than it.

anyhow. you know that great damp, dusty smell that happens just before or at the very beginning of the rain? there’s a word for that: petrichor. i think it will have to become a permanent part of my vocabulary. i’m so glad someone invented a word for it; it’s a beautiful scent.
