what is the grub worm?
a blind, bloated, pale, writhing, wriggling mess
what is the chief end and purpose of the grub worm?
to be food for the robins, or, if escapes the robins, to grow up into a june beetle
what other purpose does the grub worm serve?
to remind humans, in its grossness, of the cursed creation and their own corrupted frames
what is the june beetle?
a brown, buzzing, blundering, sticky-legged stupidity incapable
in its brief life of avoiding bright lights, window screens and human beings
what is the chief end and purpose of the june beetle?
to be food for the toad, the tarantula, and other small carnivorous creatures
what other purpose does the june beetle serve?
to remind humans, in its stubborn, raucous attempts at self-immolation,
of their own wayward bent toward soul destruction — and to teach them patience
will the grub worm and the june beetle exist in the new creation?
we do not know if the grub worm redeemed will have a place
in the new heavens and the new earth, but if it does, it is possible we will not recognize it for what it once was in the transfigured splendor of its everlasting form — or perhaps the grub worm will remain the same, and it is we who will be changed to see it as it truly is
