i didn’t know what maundy meant
as i crept into the sanctuary
and sat alone at the end of the pew
i didn’t know it was washing day
until the father in white robes called
the children with dirty feet to come
and all my brothers and sisters
waited barefoot for their turn
to exchange humilities with him
i sat alone at the end of my pew
longing to be washed with them all
but i hadn’t known what maundy meant
and i was wearing stockings
