the last day of april

all day long the rain poured
lightning cut the sky
and thunder grumbled in reply
as we who were indoors also
answered irritably — rain
but then the evening’s gray
was suddenly shot through with gold
the groaning sky glowed
and a brightening rainbow
reflected back on itself
in a twinned arc —
while all around
soggy creation cried glory!
slowly gold deepened to rose
to purple, to indigo
and then finally to black
but the memory
of the last day of april
glowed still
