all monday the fog hung heavy in the air
as if to say the new year had arrived
but no one was quite ready to face it
toward twilight the streets were opaque with mist
then, as we struggled to see through the glare-reflecting gloom,
great drops of rain came plummeting from the sky
and lightning, for a moment, lit the world with an incandescent glow
before pitching us into a darkness deeper still
