“… But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought:
So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.” — T.S. Eliot, East Coker
before light springs over the edge of the world,
before the sun breaks the bonds of night,
before stillness gives way to the dawning,
go in hope to the garden and tell me what you find.
before the cold melts into the warmth,
before the grass glows green like fire,
before the earth turns to the waking,
go in faith to the garden and tell me what you find.
before leaf unfurls from thorn tree,
before roses swell into the bud,
before the peas leap from their planting,
go in love to the garden and tell me what you find.
take your hand from your mouth, poet,
and tell me of the Light
on the face
of the Gardener.
