once upon a
time there
was a
fuzzy
baby
caterpillar whose
appetite was quite
voracious
the caterpillar
ate and
ate and
soon its appetite was
sated
then it grew sleepy
and drowsed
on awaking sometime later
the caterpillar found
itself imprisoned
in a dreadful
dreadful
casing
which was bimpley
and itchy
and not at
all
what the fuzzy
baby
caterpillar
had been used to
it curled up and
cried
because it thought it
was ugly
and no one would know
it was actually pretty
inside
after an
interminable span
of time
the casing
cracked slowly
open
and was
flooded with sunlight
the little caterpillar
crawled out
sleepily onto a
twig
and then realized …
it was no longer a caterpillar
but neither was it the
ugly creature
in the casing
it had wings
elated, the former caterpillar
stretched and stretched
its new-found
wings
basking in the warm glow
of the sun
it felt the wind whizz through
the thousand tiny
hairs that graced
its wings
slowly
slowly
the wings were
dry and
strong and
ready for
flight
the former caterpillar
tentatively tested its
flying skills
first a timid flap
then a stronger stroke
finally it flew off
the twig into the
open air
wanting to see the
beautiful wings that
gave it such
exhilarating experiences
the former caterpillar
craned its neck
to look at itself
it was red and
furry
the former caterpillar didn’t
know whether to
laugh or
cry
because it was a
moth
